The Springs Lava Tour
When the The Springs' property was purchased and construction of the resort initiated we were blessed by having spectacular night views of the lava flowing down the Southern side of the Arenal Volcano, directly facing us. In September of 2008 after a large buildup of volcanic material, there was a collapse of the volcano's cone wall which redirected the majority of the lava flows to the western face of Arenal. The volcano is constantly evolving and reshaping itself and its growth is characterized by these periodic events. Historically, every couple of years a shift in direction of the flows takes place.
On a clear night you can always see the glow of the magma emerging from the cone from right here at The Springs and occasionally a larger eruption will send red hot boulders tumbling down on our side. However, until the time that Mother Nature deems us the fortune of having the large effusion flows once again visible from here, the best viewing points are a short drive to the western face of the volcano.
Every evening at 6:30pm we offer our guests a guided tour to some of the best (and safest) lava observation points. Although we can't guarantee sightings, and if the cloud cover permits, you will almost certainly be entertained by Arenal's majestic lava show and the thunderous sounds of Strombolian explosions and falling rock. Your guide will explain not only historical and geological facts of the volcano but cultural specifics as well.
